AI in the CG and VFX industry is a hot topic. Some see it as a threat, others as a tool, and many aren’t sure where they stand. It’s natural to feel uncertain when something new comes along. But instead of taking sides, let’s look at it for what it is, another shift in technology, like many we’ve seen before.
AI can automate tasks, generate ideas, and even create images or animations. That much is true. But it’s important to remember that AI doesn’t operate on its own. It needs input, direction, and intent. At its core, AI is just a machine following commands. Creativity, however, is much more than that. It’s the spark of an idea, the choices you make, and the personal touch you bring to your work.
The fear that AI will replace artists is understandable, but it’s worth noting that every new technology in the past has sparked similar concerns. When digital tools like Photoshop or Maya were introduced, many thought they would replace traditional skills. Instead, they became part of the workflow, enhancing what artists could do. The same could happen with AI, it’s a tool, not a replacement.
On the other hand, it’s also fair to question its impact. Will it make things too easy, too mechanical? Will it take away the human touch that makes art special? These are valid concerns, and as an industry, it’s important to keep these discussions open. The key is to ensure that AI is used thoughtfully, to enhance creativity rather than replace it.
At the end of the day, it’s not about choosing sides. It’s about recognizing that AI, like any tool, has its strengths and limitations. How it fits into your work depends on how you use it. For some, it might be a way to speed up workflows or test ideas. For others, it might not feel necessary at all. Both perspectives are valid.
The real question isn’t whether AI is good or bad, it’s how we, as creators, adapt to it. It’s a shift, like many before, and how we handle it will define its role in our industry. Whether you choose to explore it, experiment with it, or stick to traditional methods, the focus should always remain on the creativity and storytelling that make this field so special.
So let’s keep an open mind. AI is here, and it’s up to us to decide how we let it shape our work and our industry. The conversation doesn’t end here, it’s just beginning.
